The following 10 shots are of Cua Viet, near the DMZ.  When I saw "Mad Max, the Road Warrior" the scenes looked familiar.

helgoland.jpg (271837 bytes)
Hospital ship Helgoland.  A neutral nation ship ported in Danang to give medical services.  While I was stationed at the PTF base we kept close track of the Helgoland.  It if put out to sea we expected rocket attacks.  Guess they knew more than we did.  It never prevented our officers from inviting the nurses to our base for the weekend shows when I was stationed with the PT boats, however.

Beautiful Guam.  Not much for a sailor to do there, but it is a gorgeous island.

guam3.jpg (423883 bytes)
This beach, near Talafofo Falls, was reported to have the best surf in guam.

View from the cliffs at the end of the navy base.  This is reportedly the site of mass Japanese suicides when the island was taken in WWII.

Anyone who has spent any time on an LST knows that even in gentle seas 30 degree rolls are the norm.

lst5.jpg (404158 bytes)

lst6.jpg (279579 bytes)
In rougher water 45 degree rolls that went on day after day made life miserable aboard.

lst7.jpg (355709 bytes)
An amusing incident.  The causeway in Okinawa was covered by moss at low tide.  The skipper slipped on the moss and went in.  The XO went to help and also went in.

lst12.jpg (355622 bytes)
The officers used this moment as an excuse to inspect the bow doors.  Moments after this pic was taken the Chief Boatswains Mate told me to put my camera away.

Offloading part of a Marine division in Okinawa.  We were told that we couldn't write home about this part of our cruise in 1969.  We didn't want to tip off the home folks that forces were being removed from Vietnam.  The personnel carrier driving off the ship was used to plow up roads suspected of being mined.  Probably the most menacing looking machine I've ever seen.

Good to see the quality of the pics improved over time.  I'd traded my Kodak Instamatic in for a 35 mm Minolta, $126 at the Navy Exchange.
